Many people struggle with forgiving others. I know that it is something that I struggle with and find myself asking God to help me to do. It’s difficult to forgive when someone has hurt, angered, abused or, humiliated you.
We carry unforgiveness for years and years. We allow it to fester and grow until it often consumes us. We can become so miserable and bitter within ourselves that we can hardly function.
That misery and bitterness become so toxic that it can start to affect our overall mental, emotional, and physical health. Not only does it affect our health, but it also spills over into every part of our lives.
We become distrustful. We’re nasty to others so our personal and professional relationships can suffer as a result.
Perhaps the reason why many people struggle with believing God has forgiven them is because we struggle with forgiving others. So, we in turn feel as though God hasn’t forgiven us if we’ve asked for it.
Here is what we have to remember about God: He is NOT like us. His ways are NOT our ways and his thoughts are HIGHER than our thoughts.
Forgiveness is not for the other person. It is for YOU so that you can more forward in the purpose God has for you. Unforgiveness can render you ineffective and useless.
All of my life I’ve heard God is faithful and just to forgive if you ask. Well, I have to admit there were some things that I’ve asked for forgiveness for that I didn’t feel as though I’d been forgiven.
In my small, finite mind I just felt the grievance was too great.
Here is what I’d like to share with you about God’s forgiveness: HE REALLY DOES FORGIVE!
His forgiveness is real. His forgiveness is true. His forgiveness is powerful.
I didn’t really get it until I read the prophets. Over and over and over and over again the Children of Israel disobeyed and betrayed God. And over and over and over again he forgave them when they asked for it.
This is what astonished me about his forgiveness: IT WAS IMMEDIATE!
He didn’t say well, let me see how you act for the next few months and then maybe I’ll think about forgiving you.
He didn’t say well, I don’t know. Let me think about it. Then maybe after you’ve begged me enough, I’ll see what I can do.
NO, when they turned to him and asked for forgiveness, he IMMEDIATELY FORGAVE them.
And listen the Children of Israel had gotten so debased in their behavior that even the pagan nations shunned them! Let that sink in for a moment. The people who had no moral values shunned them!
So, what does ALL of this have to do with you?
If God immediately forgave them, he will do the same for you and HAS DONE the same for you. All you have to do is ASK.
Don’t waste any more of your life punishing yourself because you think God hasn’t forgiven you if you’ve asked him. Furthermore, don’t allow anyone else to make you feel guilty about something in which you’ve asked God for forgiveness.
I hope you have a great week ahead!
