As I continued reading Philippians 2, I saw something that I hadn’t noticed before, verse 2:8. It says, “And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”
Christ was a living sacrifice! He modeled being a living sacrifice in his life or ministry as his life was a ministry. But he also modeled it in his death on the cross. He was living and breathing when he was tortured and hung on the cross! His life and his blood were not only valuable but also powerful. His life and blood were so valuable and powerful that we no longer have to offer up any sacrifices for forgiveness of our sins ever again. His blood reached back and atoned for the sins of people in Genesis who believed. It has currently atoned for the sins of people who believe and is moving forward to atone for people who have yet to be born who shall believe. Isn’t that amazing! I’m talking about your God and my God.
Since Christ was a living sacrifice, should we too not be a living sacrifice if we are to have the mind of Christ? Paul tells us in Romans 12:1 “to present our bodies as a living sacrifice.” Easier said than done I know (LOL).
What is a sacrifice? In general terms a sacrifice is giving something of value in exchange for something of greater value. If the thing that we’re giving doesn’t hold any personal value for us, it’s not a sacrifice.
This tells me that our bodies are valuable! Why? Because our bodies are the place where the Spirit of God dwells.
Here is what the Bible says about our bodies:
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 New King James Version (NKJV)
16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 New King James Version (NKJV)
19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
You are valuable to God because you are his most glorious creation fearfully and wonderfully made in his image. You are his child. You are so valuable to God that he sent his Son to die on the cross just for you. God loves you! People only value you if you have something to give. But God valued you when you had nothing to give him. Instead of requiring you to give him something, he gave you the most wonderful gift you will ever receive. He sacrificed his Son for you. With the death of Jesus you now have the deposit of the Holy Spirit dwelling within you as you accepted Christ as your Savior.
Since God has given us such a wonderful gift our “reasonable service” to him is to offer our bodies as a “living sacrifice” (Romans 12:1). We should offer our bodies for service to God for him to use as he sees fit. We should use all our faculties and gifts to glorify God. Our lives should be a ministry unto God so that when people observe us, they are attracted not to us but to the Holy Spirit that dwells in us.
What’s in it for you?
You will have a life of fulfillment knowing that you are living a life of purpose. I know for a fact that people are searching for fulfillment. They are searching for it everywhere but in the right place, Christ. Give your life to Christ and watch him take it and do with it what you never could.
In the long term, you will have eternal life. People are afraid of dying. But you can be certain of spending your life in eternity with Christ. You no longer have to be afraid of what’s beyond death. You will have assurance that your destination is Heaven.
Are You Willing to Be a Living Sacrifice? Be Blessed
