Where does the time go?  One moment you’re a carefree 20-year-old.  The next moment you’re at the age where you’re thinking: “Am I really going to be able to retire?”  You start looking at your 401K if you’re blessed to have one and realize the answer to that question is a big fat NO!  At that moment you start to have what I like to call the “401K Blues.”

I did have a 401K account, but I had to use it to live off of due to multiple layoffs which lasted for several years.  The funny thing is that during that period of time I realized that I would never have enough to retire.  The money that I had was a start.  But the reality is I don’t think I could have gotten it to an amount where I could have retired.   Can you relate?

Here are the 2 primary reasons why I don’t thing I would have ever had enough to retire:

  • Taking into account, there are NO OTHER finances coming into my household, the amount it took to live even marginally was more that I would have thought.
  • The cost of healthcare is extremely expensive when you’re not under an employer group plan. Again, with NO OTHER finances coming into the household, it’s a very large expense for which must be accounted.

Bottom Line:  I’d need to be a multi-millionaire to retire

Is your 401K nothing more than a glorified savings account?

I have a friend that’s always crying whenever she has to take money out of her 401K.  She’s yet to come to grips with the reality that at her age, retirement is now.  She doesn’t have enough to where she can start planning to retire in ‘X’ number of years.  So, in reality her 401K is nothing more than a glorified savings account because she will NEVER be able to use it to retire.  She could work for the rest of her life and it just wouldn’t be enough.

Some reasons why people can’t retire:

  • You had a 401K but had to use it.
  • You had a 401K but didn’t make enough money to contribute to it for it to work for you.
  • You started saving too late in life.
  • You didn’t make enough to even start a 401K.
  • You took a loss in the market that’s set you back
