Determination – I would say it’s an attribute that’s necessary for success. We have disappointments, setbacks and road blocks. Oh, and let’s not forget about the people who’ve made it their business to discourage us.
Without determination we would get stuck in disappointment, setbacks and roadblocks. Like quicksand we’d get sucked down to the bottom until we’re so defeated that we’ve been rendered inoperable.
Before we talk about the synonyms for determination. I think it’s appropriate to define what determination is.
Determination is the act of coming to a decision or of fixing or settling a purpose. I love that definition! I like the “settling a purpose” part. We must make sure that we have settled (no doubting) on our purpose or destination.
There were several synonyms for determination. But these 3 were a little bit surprising to me because I’d never considered these words to be related: boldness, conviction and self-confidence.
I had never considered them to be the ingredients of determination.
Boldness – Boldness is not hesitating or fearful in the face of actual or possible danger or rebuff; courageous and daring. I would venture to say that even in the presence fear, someone who has boldness moves forward despite that fear.
What does boldness have to do with determination? It takes boldness to accomplish your goals and dreams. It takes boldness to do something that others have said you could never do. It takes boldness to step outside the box and elevate your thinking to a place that pushes you to want more and do more.
Conviction – Conviction a fixed or firm belief. To have conviction is to have this overwhelmingly strong belief that it dictates what you do. Conversely, conviction could also be a strong warning that steers you in a different direction.
In having determination, you need both aspects of conviction. You need to have such an overwhelming belief in your goals and dreams that it dictates the action you take to reach the finish line. Without this belief you’d never get anything accomplish. People who a conviction they have been created for greatness, achieve greatness.
On the other hand, you need to have the part of conviction that warns you and steers you in a different direction. Not only do you need this part of conviction, but you also need to heed to it. I know that so many times I’ve been warned. But ignored the warning only to end up somewhere I wasn’t intending. It’s this conviction that directs and steers you away from dead ends and accidents.
Self-confidence – Self-confidence is realistic confidence in one’s own judgment, ability, power, etc. Note that it is realistic confidence. This isn’t arrogance or an inflated self-image. This is simply the belief that you have it in you to accomplish whatever you need to accomplish. Whatever you need to accomplish your purpose, you have already been equipped with the gift or the ability. All you need to do is tap into it.
How could you have determination without self-confidence? If you don’t have the confidence to know that you are able to overcome mountains and obstacles, you’ll allow yourself, other people and external circumstance tell that you can’t do it. Determination requires that you have the self-confidence to walk in your purpose. You’re smart enough. You’re strong enough. You’re innovative enough.
Be Determined and Be Blessed
